After an imaginative soundtrack of Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, Vishal and Gulzar come with a horror flick which is directed by Kannan Iyer. To have Emraan Hashmi in a film, it’s a big responsibility for the composer to have a good melodious album. People say Pritam’s music suits Emraan the most. Does Vishal’s music too?? Let’s find out!
The song starts with a Guitar riff in the style of Amit Trivedi. Sunidhi begins her lines and it creates a soothing atmosphere. After a long Mukhda composed in a western style, comes the hook line and the song completely changes its mood and you would start grooving on the perfectly-used base guitars. As Clinton starts his lines following the same notes, Gluzar’s lyrics become pure and lovely. This song offers a great listen to the masses as well as the true music lovers. The singing is beautiful and energetic. The song is catchy and it grows on you too, well that’s the magic! 🙂
2. Totey Ud Gaye – Singers: Suresh Wadekar, Rekha Bharadwaj, Sukhwinder Singh
Starting with energetic electronic guitars, this song soon becomes a dull track which has not a single element to attract the listeners. Vishal uses his usual favorites Sukhwinder, Suresh Wadekar and his wife. I have personally never understood why Vishal makes it necessary to give atleast one song from each of his album to Suresh Wadekar. His voice creates a lot of kerfuffle and soon the listener would try his best to change the track. Tabla along with the Nagada has made this one quite avoidable. It’s nothing but a “GET OUT”.
3. Kaali Kaali – Singer: Clinton Cerejo
Now this track would surely make you realize that you are listening to a Horror film’s soundtrack. Again a beautiful intro with a simple guitar, this is a unique song that romances with you and at the same time, it threatens you too. Clinton Cerejo is a sound for this song. His vocals merges beautifully with the composition. Stanza is well made and arranged. Lyrics are undoubtedly superb. Ending with a mild piano, this song surely would surely make a great impact to the listeners.
4. Lautungi Main – Singer: Rekha Bharadwaj
Oh man!! Don’t consider it a typical Rekha track! Vishal has used all the ingredients to haunt the listeners. Starting with a haunting interlude, it is one of the best tracks of Rekha Bharadwaj. It’s a song written on the behalf of Daayan which is beautifully done by Gulzar. Vishal’s utterly mesmerizing composition has made this track a perfect treat to all the true music lovers. It has completely amazing and unique arrangements using some great haunted sounds. Rekha’s “Jaaneya Ve” in different styles has definitely made it a worth listen! When Rekha finishes his lines, you would be having a great time listening to some “Daayan” sounds. One amazing fact is this song ends exactly the same way as Phir Le Aaya Dil from Barfi! ends and the singer was Rekha only. 🙂 It is a “WELCOME” song.
5. Sapna Re Sapna – Singer: Padmanabh Gaikwad
Again and again, starting with a beautiful Guitar riff :D, this song is delightfully sung by Saregamapa Lil Champs contestant Padmanabh. Gulzar’s Rhymish poetry and Vishal’s musical portray make it a worth listen. The flute in the interlude after the 1st stanza beautifies it even more. Padmanabh is confident, Vishal is artistic, Gulzar is poetic, this song is a healthy treat for the listeners.
Ek Thi Daayan is a well systematic soundtrack which has some great compositions and lyrics. Vishal has confidently composed the songs and amazingly made it a haunted album. Generally, Indian Horror films have a romantic soundtrack but Vishal has always been a trend setter and he again showed it. This album would definitely have got “agree” but a Totey Ud Gaye screwed it all.
The Final Verdict: POSSIBLE
