S-E-L Magic! Again and Again! (D-Day – Music Review)

Who would have imagined that this incredible trio would create incredible soundtracks in two consecutive weeks. Yes, it was the previous week when bhaag Milkha Bhaag music released and proved that Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy are still very much in the industry. One week later, they are here with another album D-Day. Directed by their old friend Nikhil Advani with whom they have always strike the right chord right from the epic Kal Ho Naa Ho, Salaam-e-Ishq, Patiala House and many more. It’s an action thriller and the story is said to be very much inclined towards the reality. You wouldn’t have expected that this lovely trio would spread their magic in a genre like this too.

Music:  Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy;  Lyrics:  Niranjan Iyengar;  Music Label:  T Series

1. Duma  Dum – Singers: Mika Singh, Mani Mahadevan, Gaurav Gupta, Devendra Chitnis, Arun Ingle

How many times this would be remade, nobody can actually tell. But how many remakes would continue to be successful, I can tell – ALL.  From my experience, this song has never been remade badly. Everytime it is remade by different composers, different lyricists and used in different situations but all the attempts have been successful till now. This one is also unique in its own way. Mika being the lead vocalist, has provided immense power in the song and the techno trumpet has given a new shape to the track. Amazing arrangements having high energy and intensity. The other vocalists have performed the chorus part which is also sounded beautifully.

2. Alvida – Singers: Nikhil D’Souza, Sukhvinder Singh, Shruti Haasan, Loy Mendosa

It’s a western oriented romantic track with a slow soft keyboard chord in the whole song. Nikhil’s voice is just perfect for a track like this. Shruti has done amazing job. Her vocals sounded appealing. The rhythm given is slow steady and created a pleasant romantic atmosphere. Niranjan haw written some amazing words which soothes the song more. Sukhvinder’s part is just incredible. Beautiful work composition in his part and some splendid singing from him. A track which one should really listen to.

3. Murshid Khele Holi – Singers: Munawar Masoom, Javed Ali, Shankar Mahadevan, Gaurav Gupta, Rajiv Sundaresan, Mani Mahadevan, Raman Mahadevan

Power to the trio for trying to make the track closest to a real qawaali. A brilliant attempt. Munawar Masoom’s vocals are the root of the song and Javed Ali added flavors to it. Amazing singing by all the singers in the lead and in the chorus. A very good and efficient use of Dholak, Tabla and Haronium and almost every instrument that a pure qawaali requires. Lyrics somehow manages to impress the masses, specially the hook line. composition has a lot of variations and offers great enjoyment to the listeners who love these kind of tracks. This is not a track which would take time to settle its place among the listeners but it would go smoothly and make its listeners love with it.

4. Ek Ghadi – Singer: Rekha Bharadwaj

If that was a qawwali, this one is a beautiful Ghazal. Superb composition. Rekha Bharadwaj made her soul sounded in the track and not just her vocals. Lyrics are awestruck the mood and touches the soul. This song proves that Niranjan has a great sense of literature. Tabla is the leading instrument in this track. It sounded soothing and relaxing. Arrangements are one of the nicest in this year. Simple, subtle but a great sound creator. This song would not be among the masses but would surely liked by some set of standard music listeners.

5. Dhuaan – Singers: Rahul ram, Siddharth Mahadevan, Alyssa Mendosa, Thomson Andrews, Kashia Braganza, Crystal Sequeira, Leon D’Souza

Oh! What an amazing composition! This one is really really something that would touch your heart and emotionalize your breath. Rahul Ram starts with his heavy voice. He sings the Mukhda part and Siddharth is being given the hook line and his voice just mesmerizes in the heart of the listener. What a lyrics! Hat’s off to Niranjan for such thoughts and converting them into phrases. Arrangements are just brilliant. Specially when the hook line is repeated in a higher note. A genius attempt by the trio. The only problem with this track is its duration. It is too short to get comfortable. It has such a nice melody and meaningful lyrics that one would want to listen for some more minutes. Keeping the duration aside, this is the WELCOME song.

D-Day! It was expected that there would be some nice songs but this is just amazing! Incredible work by the trio. From this album, they have firmed and fixed their position again with no doubts in mind. Delivering two classy albums back to back within a week is a genius attempt. I hope they would continue this beautiful rhythm and pace and create more and more and more coz we want from them more than any other composer. The reason being the number. They are three so we want songs level three times higher as compared to other composers and duos.
